Lieutenant Commander Shepard is the human protagonist of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, whose gender, appearance, skills and pre-service history are customizable and have an impact on the story. Shepard's first name is also customizable, but it is never mentioned in the game. The default prefabricated Shepard is a male soldier named John, with the Earthborn / Sole Survivor profile.
Shepard was born on April 11, 2154, graduated from the Systems Alliance N7 special forces program (service no. 5923-AC-2826), a veteran of Skyllian Blitz, and was initially assigned to SSV Normandy in 2183 as executive officer. The order of the main missions can be altered by the player and thus change the order in which the events of the story are triggered.
Subsequently, two sequels of the game have been published until completing a trilogy: Mass Effect 2 in 2010 and Mass Effect 3 in 2012.
The Mass Effect game was named "Game of the Year 2007" by The New York Times3 and won first place in the list of best Xbox 360 games by IGN.4
