The Caribbean flamingo is a subspecies of the greater flamingo an is the national bird of The Bahamas. Flamingos have the longest lifespan from the world of birds, reaching the age of 70. There was an old greater flamingo that lived to be 83-year-old at the Adelaide Zoo in Australia. They live in colonies of thousands of birds. Males and females of flamingos perform a spectacular courtship dance to attract a mate and females only lay around one egg per year. "She is pure Alice in Wonderland, and her appearance and demeanour are a nicely judged mix of the Red Queen and a Flamingo" (Truman Capote).
