The Caucasus Mountains comprise the Caucasus region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, including the surrounding plains. The highest peak is Elbrus at 5,642 m.
At the moment the states in the Caucasus area are: Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. On the northern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains lies the Russian Federation with its administrative subdivisions: Krasnodar Territory, Stavropol Territory and the autonomous republics of Adygea, Karaciai-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya and Dagestan.
