The Carpathian Mountains are a series of beautiful mountains that form an arc across Central and Eastern Europe. They are the third longest mountain range in Europe after the Urals and the Scandinavian Mountains.
They extend from the east of the Alps in Austria and the Czech Republic to the Iron Gate of the Danube River in Romania and Serbia. They also cover parts of Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, and Hungary Their highest peak is Gerlachovka in Slovakia, which rises 2,655 m.
The Carpathian Mountains, surrounded by their mysterious atmosphere and fairy-tale aura, shelter the largest free European wolf and bear populations as well as the highest number of European virgin forests. The Carpathian Mountains are a cradle of European mysticism. Borgo Pass, Bram Stoker chose the Carpathian Mountains for the location of the imaginary castle of the vampire Count Dracula, and Jules Verne also found inspiration in these mountains when writing his famous novel, The Carpathian Castle.
Also, a famous high budget screening which filmed all of its mountain scenes in the Carpathians is “Cold Mountain”, nominated for seven Oscars.
